Super Typhoon Fung-wong Strikes the Philippines: Two Fatalities and Large-Scale Displacement Reported

The Philippines has been hit hard by Super Typhoon Fung-wong, which left a minimum of two fatalities and displaced over a million residents.

Officials stated that the powerful weather system triggered extensive sudden floods, coastal inundation, mudslides, and destructive gale-force winds, leading to the evacuation of millions of people nationwide.

Extensive Destruction and Emergency Operations

In the town of Pandan, one of the worst-hit regions, disaster response teams recorded floodwaters reaching rooftop levels and residences washed out by strong flows.

Our team rescued fourteen people stranded atop a house engulfed in flood in a low-lying neighbourhood,” an emergency official explained. “A father frantically contacted us, saying the roof of his house was at risk of tearing away by the wind. We rescued him and four relatives.”

By Monday, officials announced two fatalities: a drowning victim in Catanduanes and another who died when her house collapsed in eastern Samar.

Storm Intensity and Projected Path

The intense storm weakened to a typhoon on Monday morning while moving over the main island, home to the national capital.

Per meteorological authorities, the storm’s sustained wind speed decreased from 115 mph to 102 mph, but gusts were still reaching more than 275 km/h.

The cyclone is projected to lose strength as it moves in the direction of Taiwan.

Response and Recovery

The national disaster response service indicated it was still working to evaluate destruction to infrastructure and homes.

Approximately thousands of shelters were activated to temporarily house 92,000 families.

Recent Context and Climate Impact

The typhoon hit shortly following another severe storm, that claimed at least 224 people with another 135 missing prior to advancing toward Vietnam, where it killed five.

Searches for the missing persons were halted on Sunday over risks to emergency personnel.

Global warming is making cyclones more intense and common. Fung-wong is the 21st typhoon to hit the Philippines in 2025.

Scientists have found that the rate of intense cyclones hitting the Philippines has increased doubled in the past twenty years.

Global assessments suggest that severe weather events cause approximately millions in dollars in losses for the Philippines every year.

The Philippine president issued an emergency declaration on Thursday due to the severe damage from Kalmaegi and anticipated impacts from the new storm.
