Working Life of Salary Insufficient for UK Labor Force to Become Part of Wealthiest 10%, Report Finds

Based on recent study, the typical earner in the UK would need 52 years' worth of salary to attain the wealth level of the wealthiest 10% in the country.

Widening Economic Disparity Over Time

The study examined net worth data including the 2020-22 timeframe and discovered that back in the mid-2000s, it would have taken 38 years of typical employment income to enter the top 10th of the wealth distribution.

An economic expert involved with the report observed: "Financial divides in Britain are now so large that a typical full-time employee accumulating their complete salary across their entire working life would continue to be incapable to achieve the peak of the financial hierarchy."

Assessing the Financial Disparity

The study discovered that the disparity between the net worth of the typical individual and someone in the top 10% was £1m in the mid-2000s, but had expanded to 1.3 million pounds in real terms by 2020-22.

The researcher added: "These differences are especially alarming as financial progression in Britain is limited – people that start life affluent tend to remain affluent, and conversely applies."

Proportional Economic Disparity

Although the wealth gap growing in absolute terms, the share of total wealth in the UK held by the most affluent homes – termed "relative wealth inequality" – has been "mostly consistent since the eighties," according to the analysis.

During this period, overall assets in the UK increased dramatically from three times the annual GDP, to almost 7.5 times.

Contributors of Wealth Inequality

Referred to as "automatic" appreciation, via growing real estate costs and changes in pension valuations, were the key contributors of the growing financial disparity since 2010, per the report.

These increases typically went to senior citizens with real estate, the research shows – exacerbating the generational financial disparity.

Intergenerational Wealth Disparities

The median economic difference between individuals aged 30-34 and those in their early 60s more than doubled in real terms, from 135 thousand pounds in pre-financial crisis, to £310,000.

Regional Disparities

Furthermore, the study revealed pronounced area-based disparities, with the average level of net worth in 2020-22 amounting to £290,000 in the SE of England, where real estate values have tended to rise rapidly, compared with £110k in the NE of England.

Pandemic Period Impact

Amid the health crisis, when numerous employees were covered under the government-supported job retention program, and Covid shutdowns reduced expenditure possibilities, the information reveals numerous families were capable of accumulating, enhancing their financial standing.

Higher-income households achieved superior outcomes, however. "The typical family in the bottom income bracket saw their liquid savings increase by just £80 over the pandemic period (2019-20 to 2021-22), approximately equivalent to the 24 months before COVID. Conversely, the median home in the wealthiest fifth saw their liquid savings rise by £4,200," the analysis concludes.
